A balanced bite, allows harmony (click) between the oral structures and promotes dental health. An unbalanced bite causes disharmony (dysfunction) and promotes disease and damage (click). Pain (click) is often associated with these damaged structures. The pain and functional problems associated with an unbalanced bite are referred to as TMD or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, commonly referred to as "TMJ".

(Technically TMJ is really just an abbreviation for  the Temporo-Mandibular-Joint (the jaw joint) but it has taken on the meaning of the syndrome).
